Katie & Connor's Love Story Film | The Surprise Engagement Film Premiering at Their Stone Haven Rehearsal Dinner

Every couple has a story, but every once in a while, a story comes along that reminds me exactly why I fell in love with filmmaking in the first place. When Katie and Connor first reached out about creating their engagement film, I thought we were planning a beautiful "day in the life" session. Little did I know, they had something so much bigger in mind.

Katie asked me a question that instantly sparked my creativity: "Have you ever incorporated home videos from when a couple was growing up?" The answer was no... but I immediately knew I wanted to.

For the next several months, Katie and Connor dug through years of family home videos, searching for little moments from their childhoods. Birthday parties. Backyard adventures. Family vacations. Tiny glimpses into the lives they were living long before they ever knew each other.

While they gathered those priceless memories, I worked behind the scenes creating interview questions for both sets of parents. Instead of formal interviews, I asked them to simply record themselves at home, sharing stories about Katie and Connor's childhoods, what they were like growing up, what kind of spouse they had always prayed their child would one day find, and what they love most about the person their son or daughter is marrying. Those recordings became some of my favorite moments in the film.

Watching two families reflect on decades of answered prayers is something I'll never forget.

Their Engagement Session in Huntsville, Alabama

For the present-day portion of their story, we spent the afternoon together in downtown Huntsville. Rather than posing for the camera, I encouraged Katie and Connor to simply treat me like the third wheel on their date. We started with coffee and conversation at Honest Coffee before wandering the streets of downtown Huntsville together. Then we made our way to Big Spring Park, feeding the ducks and fish, laughing between conversations, and enjoying one of those slow afternoons that feels like it could last forever. We finished the day with a cozy blanket tucked beneath the trees while the sun began to set. Of course, I couldn't resist bringing out my favorite Sony camcorder to capture those nostalgic moments with that perfectly imperfect home-video feel. Between the camcorder footage, cinematic shots, and a few dreamy drone clips, every piece felt like it belonged together. It truly became a visual time capsule.

The Surprise Premiere

Then Katie shared another surprise with me. She wasn't planning on sending the film to family after it was finished. She wanted everyone to experience it together for the very first time at their rehearsal dinner. AND she invited me to come. As wedding filmmakers, we usually deliver a film and imagine what those first reactions might look like. We rarely get to witness them. Sitting quietly in that room while their families laughed, cried, smiled, and watched decades of memories come together into one story was one of the most meaningful moments of my career. Seeing Katie and Connor experience their film for the very first time surrounded by the people who helped shape their lives was incredibly special.

It's a memory I'll carry with me forever.

This project reminded me that wedding films aren't just about documenting a season of life.

They're about preserving a legacy. Katie and Connor, thank you for trusting me with your story. It was an absolute honor to help tell it.

If you're dreaming of an engagement film that's more than just beautiful footage and is something deeply personal that tells the story of how your lives became one, I would love to create something unforgettable with you.

Xoxo,

Chelsey
